# FortiMail and FortiSIEM: match the October fixes to the exposed service

FortiMail CVE-2026-104286 and FortiSIEM CVE-2026-106173 require different fixes and network restrictions. Fortinet confirms exploitation of the mail flaw; its FortiSIEM advisory does not report known exploitation.

## What it is

Status as of 25 October 2026. This article uses Fortinet's FortiMail advisory revised 7 October 2026 and FortiSIEM advisory published 13 October 2026. Re-check their product tables, workarounds and exploitation status before acting.

FortiMail CVE-2026-104286 permits unauthenticated file writes through a path-traversal weakness; Fortinet confirms known exploitation. FortiSIEM CVE-2026-106173 permits unauthenticated code or command execution through a separate path-traversal weakness; its advisory currently says **Known Exploited: No**. Do not describe the two as one confirmed campaign. [FortiMail PSIRT](https://fortiguard.fortinet.com/psirt/FG-IR-26-175), [FortiSIEM PSIRT](https://fortiguard.fortinet.com/psirt/FG-IR-26-180).

## Why it matters

The required restrictions target different services. FortiMail's temporary controls address IBE, its identity-based encryption feature, or webmail access. FortiSIEM's workaround addresses TCP port **27918**. An administrator-login allowlist is useful hardening, but should not be recorded as closing either vulnerable service by itself.

## How to apply

- Inventory product, firmware and reachable services. On FortiMail, run `get system status` or use **Dashboard > Status**. Record the complete version; a lower build number can belong to a newer major release. [Firmware guide](https://docs.fortinet.com/document/fortimail/latest/administration-guide/432207/installing-firmware).
- Apply the vendor's branch-specific fixes:

| Product | Affected versions | Vendor solution |
| --- | --- | --- |
| FortiMail 8.0 | 8.0.0 through 8.0.1 | 8.0.2 or above |
| FortiMail 7.6 | 7.6.0 through 7.6.6 | 7.6.7 or above |
| FortiMail 7.4 | 7.4.0 through 7.4.8 | 7.4.9 or above |
| FortiMail 7.2 | 7.2.0 through 7.2.9 | Upgrade to branch 7.4 or above |
| FortiSIEM 7.5 | 7.5.0 | 7.5.1 or above |

For a FortiMail branch migration, select a corrected destination build from the table; the instruction to migrate does not make every build in the destination branch safe. Fortinet lists FortiSIEM 7.6 and FortiSIEM Cloud as unaffected. [FortiMail PSIRT](https://fortiguard.fortinet.com/psirt/FG-IR-26-175), [FortiSIEM PSIRT](https://fortiguard.fortinet.com/psirt/FG-IR-26-180).

- If immediate FortiMail upgrading is impossible, disable IBE through **Encryption > IBE > IBE Service**, or use the documented CLI sequence:

```text
config system encryption ibe
    set status disable
end
```

  Account for interruption of that encryption service. Fortinet alternatively permits disabling internet access to webmail or restricting it to trusted private networks. For FortiSIEM, restrict access to TCP 27918 as specified in its advisory.
- Hunt in FortiMail system-event and encryption logs using the current PSIRT indicators. Correlate unexpected `archive234` account creation and the message `User admin logged out from (null).` with other activity. Preserve suspicious logs and escalate for investigation; an indicator list is not a complete integrity assessment.
- Harden administrative access separately. Fortinet recommends avoiding administration on the external interface and limiting administrator access to trusted hosts, with secure protocols and multifactor authentication when remote management is necessary. Check every administrator's permitted source networks. [Hardening guide](https://docs.fortinet.com/document/fortimail/7.6.0/administration-guide/472377/general-security-tuning).
- After FortiMail upgrading, rerun `get system status`, confirm configuration conversion preserved the intended settings, and update FortiGuard packages. The firmware guide notes that installation supplies package versions bundled with the image, so newer detection updates may still be needed. Record a separate incident-response decision if compromise is suspected.
- On FortiSIEM, check **Cloud health** and **Collector health** in the GUI for installed versions, running processes and resource usage. After upgrading, verify receipt of events from collectors and agents, plus recent incidents and their triggering events. Escalate failed checks to support. These are operational health checks, not proof of no compromise. [Upgrade guide](https://docs.fortinet.com/document/fortisiem/7.5.1/upgrade-guide/505373/upgrading-to-fortisiem-7-5-x).

## Pitfalls

Do not apply FortiMail commands to FortiSIEM. For older FortiSIEM branches absent from the PSIRT table, obtain vendor confirmation of applicability and the upgrade path; absence does not establish that they are unaffected. Neither advisory supplies a universal cleanup command that certifies a previously exposed appliance as trustworthy.
