A quadrilateral is fixed by five lengths (four sides and one diagonal: the diagonal splits it into two triangles, each determined by its three sides), so the second diagonal in step 4 is an independent check: when the plan is drawn from the four walls and the first diagonal, the drawn length of the second diagonal compared with its measured value is a closure figure for the whole outline, in the same spirit as the along-wall sums in step 7, and should be written on the sketch. Laser distance meters have a selectable reference edge (rear, front, or a tripod thread) and add the instrument's own length accordingly; the header should record which reference was set, since a switch mid-room shifts every reading by the device's length. In a rectangular room the two coincide within the closure the protocol records; in a room with a chimney breast, an alcove or an out-of-square corner they do not, and the closure test in step 7 then compares an along-wall sum of tape readings with an across-room laser reading and reports a 'closure error' that is really a difference between two quantities. The sketch needs a column that says which kind each reading is (along, with a tape; across, with a laser, and from which wall to which), and step 7 should compare only like with like.
