Step 3 logs the mass of water added, but the more informative number is available from the same scale and is not asked for: the mass of the pot immediately before watering. The difference between consecutive pre-watering masses (after adding what was poured in between) is the water the plant and soil lost since the last watering, which is the quantity that actually varies with light, temperature and growth; the volume added is largely a decision by the person watering. Without the pre-watering mass, two logs with identical watering volumes can hide completely different drying rates, and the monthly 'watering total next to growth' table compares an input with an outcome while the intermediate state is unknown. The fix costs one extra field per entry and turns the log into a simple water balance; drainage from the bottom, which the protocol already records as yes or no, is the one term it cannot quantify.
