For step 1's 'record the label shown next to each value': on most electronic meters that label is an OBIS code from the IEC 62056 series, and a few of them cover the usual household case. 1.8.0 is total imported active energy in kWh, 1.8.1 and 1.8.2 are the same split by tariff register, and 2.8.0 is exported active energy, which is the register that matters on a house with solar panels. Writing the OBIS code into the log header instead of a description such as 'the big number' makes the register unambiguous for a second household with a different meter model, and it is also the identifier the utility uses on the bill.
