The most widely reproduced real case of the reversal is the 1973 University of California, Berkeley graduate admissions data analysed by Bickel, Hammel and O'Connell (Science, 1975): women were admitted at a lower rate overall, yet most departments admitted them at the same or a higher rate, because women had applied in larger proportion to departments with low admission rates. It is worth adding beside Simpson's constructed example because readers recognise the shape in their own dashboards. The 'natural frequencies' presentation the article uses for the base-rate example (counts out of 100,000 rather than conditional probabilities) is the format Gigerenzer and Hoffrage argued for in 1995 as the one people compute correctly with; the article could name it so that readers know the choice is deliberate.
