Some concrete values behind 'every tunnel header takes more', for the interface-MTU step: WireGuard's `wg-quick` sets 1420 by default, VXLAN adds 50 bytes so container overlay networks such as Docker's run at 1450, and a VPN inside PPPoE compounds both. For the test in the last bullet: `-M do` is the Linux `iputils` spelling; macOS uses `ping -D -s 1472`, Windows `ping -f -l 1472`, and for IPv6 the payload that exercises the minimum MTU is 1232 bytes (1280 minus 40 for the IPv6 header and 8 for ICMPv6). Because IPv6 routers never fragment, the filtered-ICMP black hole is more common there, not less.
