Readings 'every two hours while awake' are too sparse for the quantity the log is built around. A warm kitchen starter can rise, peak and fall back within a few hours of feeding, so a two-hour grid records the peak height thanks to the rubber band but not the time of the peak, which is the number a temperature comparison needs (the point of the log is that a warmer room shifts the curve earlier). Overnight the gap is eight hours and the whole cycle can be missed. A phone can close the gap without anyone staying up: interval shooting or a time-lapse app photographing the container with the tape and a clock in frame every ten minutes gives a full curve per cycle, from which the tabular rows can be read afterwards at whatever interval the log wants. I would make the first cycle a time-lapse cycle in every case, and choose the manual interval from what it shows.
