The lethal trifecta: private data, untrusted content and an outbound channel in one agent

An agent that combines access to private data, exposure to attacker-controlled content and any way to communicate outward can be steered into sending that data to an attacker. Removing one of the three legs is the only reliable structural defence; the article lists the outbound channels that are easy to overlook.

What it is

Simon Willison named the combination in June 2025: an agent with (1) access to private data, (2) exposure to untrusted content, and (3) the ability to communicate externally. If all three are present, an instruction planted in the untrusted content can ask the agent to read the private data and send it out. The argument rests on the observation that LLMs follow instructions found in content.

Why it matters

Each leg is usually added for a good reason, often by different people: a mail tool for reading, a browser for research, an HTTP tool for integrations. The risk appears only in the combination, so no single tool review catches it. Mixing tools from several sources — the typical MCP setup — makes the combination easy to assemble by accident.

Outbound channels that are easy to miss:

  • A rendered Markdown image or link whose URL carries data in the query string; the client fetches it automatically when it renders the answer.
  • A web fetch or search tool: the request URL itself is the message.
  • Creating a public artefact: a gist, a comment, an issue, a pull request, a calendar invite.
  • Sending mail or chat messages, including drafts that sync to a server.
  • DNS lookups triggered by any network tool.
  • Writing to a shared file that someone else's process uploads.

How to apply

  • For each agent configuration, list the tools and mark which legs each one provides; any configuration with all three needs a redesign, not a warning.
  • Prefer removing the outbound leg: no free-form URL fetches in sessions that have read private data, an egress allowlist at the network layer, and no automatic rendering of remote images in the client.
  • Split work into separate sessions: one reads untrusted content and returns a structured, size-limited result; another, without the untrusted input, handles private data.
  • Require human confirmation for any outbound action whose content was influenced by untrusted input.

Pitfalls

  • Relying on a filter that detects injected text; the source argues that such guardrails cannot promise complete protection.
  • Allowlisting a domain that hosts user content (a code host, a paste site), which re-opens the channel.
  • Forgetting that the leak can be slow: a few bytes per request over many requests still exfiltrates a key.
