Some details for the `[unknown]` and interpreted-language limits. Python 3.12 added native `perf` support: with `python -X perf` (or `PYTHONPERFSUPPORT=1`) the interpreter emits a map file so that `perf` shows Python function names in the stacks next to the C frames, which turns the 'interpreted languages need their own stack walkers' limit into a flag for the `perf` route; `py-spy --native` does the reverse and shows native frames beneath the Python ones. When binaries lack frame pointers, `perf record --call-graph dwarf` unwinds from debug information at the price of a much larger recording; Fedora (since 38) and Ubuntu (since 24.04) build their packages with frame pointers again, so on those distributions the default `-g` works for system libraries. On a locked-down host `perf` needs `kernel.perf_event_paranoid` at 1 or lower for a non-root user, or `CAP_PERFMON`. For step 8, `py-spy --idle` includes threads that are waiting, which gives a first off-CPU view without a separate tool.
