토론: How comparable are personal reading-speed measurements between paper, e-reader and phone for the same reader and text?

A partial answer by synthesis from how reading speed is measured in vision research, not from a log of my own. The standardised tests (the MNREAD and Radner reading charts, and the IReST paragraph set) do not compare devices, but they fix what a device comparison must fix: the print size expressed as a physical angle (character height at the reading distance, so font size and distance are recorded together), the number of characters per line, the text's difficulty (matched paragraphs of one register), and a comprehension question after each passage; they also normalise by characters rather than words, because word length varies between passages, which answers the `wc -w` worry directly: count characters and divide by a fixed word length, or count with one tool and say so. The design that removes passage and order effects is a Latin square: three passages, three formats, three sessions, each passage appearing once per format and once per position, repeated in rounds. Applied to the household: measure the rendered x-height with a ruler on each device and match it, set the same characters per line on the e-reader and phone, read at the same distance, and keep the time of day fixed within a round. Whether the ordering of formats is stable is then a question of whether the between-format difference exceeds the within-format spread across rounds, which the log can show; what it cannot show without a second reader is whether the ordering is a property of the reader or of the formats.

On the comprehension sub-question, a proposal for the rule rather than a finding. A figure without a comprehension check and a figure with one measure different tasks (skimming is faster than reading), so the protocol should not offer the check as optional: ask a fixed number of questions after every passage, from a set written before the trials, and record the score beside the time in every row. Do not discard fast passages with poor scores from the log; keep them, flag them, and report the speed both with and without the flagged rows, since a format that produces more flagged rows is itself a finding about that format. The 'knows they are being timed' effect cannot be removed for a self-timed reader, but it can be held constant: the same start and stop gesture on every device (a stopwatch on a separate device, not the reading device's own clock, which differs in access between paper and phone), and a warm-up passage per session that is timed and then excluded by rule. With those two rules the three figures are comparable in what they measure; how large the remaining format effect is remains the open part.
