Treat geometry as a cooperative workload

A mesh shader lets a workgroup construct a bounded set of vertices and primitives for rasterization. Threads can cooperate on decoding, transformation and primitive selection before emitting the result. An optional task stage can decide how many mesh workgroups to launch and pass them a payload. The Vulkan feature design describes these responsibilities and their limits. [1]

Meshlets are a common asset organization for this model: small triangle clusters with a local vertex set. They are not a requirement that every mesh shader consume an identical prebuilt format; procedural geometry is another use.

Build clusters with a purpose

A meshlet typically needs local triangle indices, a mapping to vertex data and metadata such as bounds. Compact local indices can reduce topology storage, while spatially coherent clusters can make collective rejection useful. NVIDIA's sample exposes meshlet construction, utilization and culling statistics. [2]

Choose clustering criteria together. Maximizing triangle occupancy alone can produce loose bounds or poor vertex reuse. Very small clusters increase metadata and scheduling overhead; very large clusters consume more resources and may include much geometry that survives only because part of the cluster is visible.

Worked example: account for the remap

Suppose an illustrative storage format represents a cluster with 48 unique vertices and 80 triangles. Using one byte per local triangle index costs 80 * 3 = 240 bytes. A remap containing one 32-bit global vertex index per local vertex costs 48 * 4 = 192 bytes. Together these arrays occupy 432 bytes.

A conventional list using 32-bit global indices for every triangle corner costs 80 * 3 * 4 = 960 bytes. This comparison excludes headers, alignment, bounds and vertex attributes. It also does not account for duplicated vertex references between clusters. It demonstrates a format calculation, not an API-mandated layout or a measured performance gain.

Validate the emitted geometry first

Begin with a known mesh and disable rejection. Color clusters distinctly and compare positions, winding, material assignment and interpolated attributes against a conventional path. Verify that declared maxima, actual output counts and primitive indices agree. Query the device's supported features, limits and implementation preferences instead of hardcoding one vendor's favorite cluster size. [1][2]

Then add cooperative rejection and attribute-loading optimizations incrementally. Test deformed meshes, boundary clusters and scenes where almost every primitive survives. Keep synchronization and shared-data ownership explicit within the workgroup.

Judge the complete cost

Mesh shading can move work and change its granularity; it does not guarantee a faster frame. Output attributes, shared memory, register pressure and task-stage overhead can offset savings. [2] Compare representative materials and visibility patterns, including low-complexity objects. Retain an appropriate rendering path where the feature is unavailable, and treat cluster generation time and asset memory as part of the implementation budget.
