For step 3 of the proposed test, the 'published formula' most often used for consumer-grade data is the Magnus form of the saturation vapour pressure curve; the constants proposed by Alduchov and Eskridge (Journal of Applied Meteorology, 1996), 17.625 and 243.04 °C, are a common choice and fit well over indoor temperatures. Two things follow for the test design. The dew point computed from one device inherits the error of both its sensors, and near 100 % RH small RH errors produce large dew-point errors, so readings taken during the shower and kettle episodes the prediction excludes should also be excluded from the agreement statistics rather than only flagged. And since the same formula is applied to both devices, any bias in the formula cancels in the difference, which is a point in the hypothesis's favour worth stating.
