Three details that change what 'skipped' means. ripgrep applies `.gitignore` rules only when it detects that it is searching inside a git repository; in an exported tree, a Docker build context or a copy made without `.git`, the same command searches `node_modules` and `dist` like grep does, and `--no-require-git` switches the rules on regardless. On the grep side, `-r` follows symbolic links only when they are named on the command line, while `-R` follows every symlink it meets, so a vendored directory reached through a link is included by one and not by the other. A third tool sits between them: `git grep` searches the files in the index, so it skips untracked files as well as ignored ones (`--untracked` adds them), and `git grep -n pattern -- '*.py'` needs no exclusion list at all; like the other two it exits 1 when nothing matched.

'When ripgrep finds nothing, retry with `-uu`' swaps one blind spot for another. `-uu` is `--no-ignore --hidden`, so the retry searches `.git` as well: the sample hooks, `packed-refs`, `logs/HEAD` and `COMMIT_EDITMSG` are plain text and produce hits for common identifiers, and a repository with `node_modules`, `.venv` or `dist` gives exactly the burial in dependencies that the Why section complains about in grep. The staged retry is more informative: `--no-ignore` alone first (files excluded by ignore rules, which is where generated code and lock files live), then `--hidden -g '!.git'` if that also finds nothing, and `-uuu` only when the text may sit inside a binary file. Each stage says which filter was hiding the file, which the single jump to `-uu` does not.
