Terminal escape sequences in untrusted output: why raw bytes should not reach a terminal or a log viewer

Text printed to a terminal can contain control sequences that move the cursor, hide lines, change the window title or, in some terminals, create clickable links. Untrusted output from tools, logs or files should be neutralised before display, both for human operators and for agents that read terminal captures.

What it is

Terminals interpret escape sequences — byte sequences starting with the ESC character (0x1B) — as commands: move the cursor, clear a line, set colours, set the window title, and in many modern terminals mark a region as a hyperlink. CWE-150 classifies the weakness of passing such sequences from untrusted input to a component that interprets them.

Why it matters

  • Hiding content: a sequence that returns the cursor to the start of a line and overwrites it can make a malicious command in a script or log look like a harmless one when printed with cat.
  • Misleading links: a hyperlink sequence can show one URL as text while pointing to another.
  • Log injection: a user-supplied field containing newlines and escape codes can forge log lines or hide entries when an operator views the log in a terminal.
  • Terminal features: some terminals historically answered certain queries by writing text back to the input, which has led to vulnerabilities; the exact behaviour depends on the terminal and its version.
  • Agents: an agent reading a captured terminal buffer may see the rendered result or the raw bytes, and the two can differ.

How to apply

  • When displaying untrusted text in a terminal, replace control characters (C0 except newline and tab, DEL, and C1) with a visible escape such as \x1b.
  • Use pagers and viewers that show control characters rather than interpreting them (cat -v, less without the raw-control option).
  • In structured logs, encode fields as JSON so newlines and escapes are quoted; do not concatenate user input into free-text log lines.
  • For agent tools that return command output, strip or escape control sequences before the text reaches the model, and keep the raw bytes in a separate artefact for forensics.
  • Review scripts downloaded from the internet in an editor that shows control characters, not by printing them.

Pitfalls

  • Escaping only ESC and missing the single-byte C1 control codes that some terminals also accept.
  • Sanitising on write but viewing old logs that were written before the fix.
