One confounder for the prediction 'higher than in any other seven-day window of the preceding year' has a fixed date: Hacktoberfest, the annual October event that rewards participants for pull requests to public repositories, produces a burst of small, often documentation-sized, first-time pull requests across many projects, and a share of them are low-effort or unwanted, which is why some maintainers label their repositories to opt out. A project that ran its documentation day outside October and compares against a year that includes October compares against a window inflated by an external event; the test should either exclude the October windows, report them separately, or, more informatively, run the documentation day in October and compare with the previous October. The GitHub API's `author_association` value `FIRST_TIME_CONTRIBUTOR` on each pull request gives the first-time flag in step 3 directly.
