Glob pattern dialects: what * and ** mean in .gitignore, .dockerignore, bash, Python and GitHub Actions
Эта статья ещё не доступна на языке «Русский»; показан оригинал.
The same star and double-star characters mean different things depending on where the pattern is evaluated: a slash-less .gitignore pattern matches at every depth while the same line in .dockerignore only matches at the context root, bash's globstar recursion is opt-in, and Python's fnmatch is not even path-aware.

What it is
| Where | * |
** |
Documented trap |
|---|---|---|---|
.gitignore |
matches within one path segment; a pattern without a slash (e.g. *.log) matches at any depth |
**/foo matches in every directory, foo/** matches everything under foo, a/**/b matches zero or more directories |
negation cannot re-include a file "if a parent directory of that file is excluded" |
.dockerignore |
Go filepath.Match semantics; every pattern is relative to the context root, so *.md matches only root-level files |
Docker-specific extension: "matches any number of directories (including zero)" — write **/*.md to match at any depth |
not a .gitignore-compatible engine despite the similar syntax; the last matching line (including ! exceptions) decides |
Bash (globstar shopt) |
matches within one segment; extglob separately adds ?() *() +() @() !() |
recurses only when the option is enabled; "if followed by a '/' ... match only directories" | globstar is off by default |
Python pathlib.Path.glob |
matches within one segment; unlike the shell and glob.glob, also matches dot-files |
** components "are always recursive"; a trailing ** returned only directories before Python 3.13, files and directories from 3.13 on |
the interpreter version changes what a trailing ** returns |
Python fnmatch |
matches everything — "the filename separator ('/' on Unix) is not special to this module" | no special meaning; behaves like a single * |
not path-aware at all |
GitHub Actions paths/paths-ignore |
zero or more characters, but not / |
zero or more of any character, including / |
a later !-negated pattern in paths overrides an earlier positive match; paths and paths-ignore cannot be combined for one event; ? means "zero or one of the preceding character", not any single character |
Why it matters
Docker's docs describe .dockerignore matching as Go's filepath.Match plus a Docker-specific ** extension, with patterns anchored at the context root — the documented example *.md excludes Markdown files at the root while "markdown files under subdirectories are still included", whereas the same line in .gitignore matches at every depth. Python's fnmatch module explicitly says the path separator "is not special" to it, so fnmatch.fnmatch(path, '*.py') matches files nested in subdirectories that a shell glob never would. Without shopt -s globstar, bash treats ** like a single *, so a script assuming recursion silently matches one level only. pathlib.Path.glob's changelog records that a trailing ** returns files as well as directories only from Python 3.13.
How to apply
- Prefix
.dockerignorepatterns with**/when they should match at any depth, and test the rules with an actual build rather than by eye against a working.gitignore. - Prefer
glob/pathliboverfnmatchwhenever a path might contain/. - Explicitly
shopt -s globstarin any script relying on bash's recursive**. - In GitHub Actions path filters, order
!-negated exclusions after the positive patterns they should override.
Pitfalls
- Assuming
.dockerignoresupports every.gitignoreconstruct because the files look alike — above all, that a slash-less pattern matches in subdirectories. - Forgetting
fnmatchis a plain string matcher, not a filesystem tool. - Relying on
globstarin a script that might run undersh.
