Proxy environment variables across curl, requests, Go, Java, Node and wget
Эта статья ещё не доступна на языке «Русский»; показан оригинал.
HTTP_PROXY's uppercase form is deliberately rejected by curl for CGI-injection reasons but accepted by Python requests outside CGI, a NO_PROXY leading dot narrows the match to subdomains in Go's httpproxy while curl ignores the dot and also matches the bare domain, and Node's fetch ignores proxy variables unless NODE_USE_ENV_PROXY or a ProxyAgent is set up.

What it is
| Tool | HTTP_PROXY case rule |
NO_PROXY leading dot |
CIDR in NO_PROXY? |
|---|---|---|---|
| curl | only lowercase http_proxy is read, "because of the CGI protocol"; HTTPS_PROXY, ALL_PROXY and NO_PROXY work in either case |
a leading . "matches that entire domain"; .example.com and example.com behave the same, bare domain included; *.example.com is not a wildcard |
yes, since 7.86.0 |
Python requests |
"Uppercase variants of these variables are also supported"; the standard library it relies on drops uppercase HTTP_PROXY when REQUEST_METHOD is set (CGI) |
plain suffix match: .example.com also matches the bare domain, and example.com also matches notexample.com |
yes, for IPv4 literal hosts |
Go (net/http + httpproxy) |
reads both cases (lowercase wins when both are set); under CGI (REQUEST_METHOD set) returns an error instead of using HTTP_PROXY |
a bare domain "matches that name and all subdomains"; a leading dot matches subdomains only, excluding the bare name | yes — "IP address prefix in CIDR notation (1.2.3.4/8)" |
| Java | not an environment variable — http.nonProxyHosts is a JVM system property |
* prefix/suffix wildcards in a pipe-separated list; no dot convention |
no |
Node.js (undici / global fetch) |
none read by default; NODE_USE_ENV_PROXY=1 or --use-env-proxy (v24.5.0 / v22.21.0+) enables them, otherwise an explicit ProxyAgent "installed globally with" setGlobalDispatcher |
built-in support: example.com is an exact host match, .example.com and *.example.com match subdomains |
IP ranges written a-b, not CIDR |
| Wget | documents only lowercase forms | matches by domain-extension suffix, e.g. .mit.edu |
not documented |
Why it matters
curl ties its lowercase-only http_proxy rule to CGI history: a request header like Proxy: becomes HTTP_PROXY in a CGI script's own environment, and "accepting the upper case version of this environment variable has been the source for many security problems." Python's requests documents accepting uppercase variants; only the standard-library lookup underneath drops HTTP_PROXY inside a CGI request. NO_PROXY looks like one convention but is not: curl strips a leading dot, so .example.com also covers the bare example.com, while Go's httpproxy package states that a bare domain matches the domain and its subdomains whereas a leading dot matches subdomains only — a NO_PROXY value moved from a curl-based tool into a Go binary can start proxying the apex domain. Node's built-in support, once enabled, treats a bare name as an exact host only.
How to apply
- Prefer the lowercase variable names, which every tool here that reads the environment understands; add uppercase copies only where a tool needs them.
- Re-derive
NO_PROXYleading-dot entries when porting a list between curl-based and Go-based tools, rather than copying it verbatim. - Configure Java through JVM system properties (
-Dhttp.proxyHost,-Dhttp.nonProxyHosts); the JVM's default proxy settings do not readhttp_proxyorno_proxy. - For Node.js code using the built-in
fetch, setNODE_USE_ENV_PROXY=1on releases that support it, or construct and install aProxyAgentexplicitly.
Pitfalls
- Assuming uppercase
HTTP_PROXYis always read; curl specifically ignores it. - Assuming a leading dot in
NO_PROXYmeans the same thing everywhere. - Assuming Node's
fetch()readsHTTPS_PROXYwithout being told to. - Writing
*.example.comfor curl orrequests, where only a lone*is special.
