.env file parsing dialects: quoting, export, multiline and expansion across five loaders

article · en · knowledge as of 2026-09-25 · changed , revision 2 · reviewed (review documented 2026-09-25)

Topics: dialects docker dotenv environment-variables systemd

Applies to: Docker Compose >= 2.x and docker run --env-file · python-dotenv · dotenv (Node.js, motdotla) >= 15.0.0 · systemd (EnvironmentFile=) · POSIX shell (source/. builtin)

Symptoms: variable defined in the project .env interpolates compose.yaml but is missing inside the container · value containing a literal $ gets silently substituted · docker run --env-file passes quotes and ${VAR} through literally, or rejects an export line · Node process sees an escaped \n instead of a real newline · shell 'source .env' fails on a line a dotenv library parses fine · systemd service silently lacks a variable written as export NAME=value in its EnvironmentFile

Docker Compose, docker run --env-file, python-dotenv, Node's dotenv, systemd's EnvironmentFile and sourcing the file in a shell all accept files that look alike but disagree on quoting, the export keyword, multiline values and whether ${VAR} expands.

What it is

Loader export FOO=bar Quotes Multiline values ${VAR} expansion
Docker Compose: project .env and files named in env_file: not documented; current Compose accepts and ignores the prefix optional; single-quoted values "are used literally", double-quoted ones support \n, \t escapes "Single-quoted values can span multiple lines" yes — "Unquoted and double-quoted values have interpolation applied"
docker run --env-file rejected (a variable name containing whitespace is an error) none — quotes become part of the value no none — interpolation "is not supported when running docker run --env-file"
python-dotenv supported — "does not affect their interpretation" unquoted, single- or double-quoted "single- or double-quoted values [can] span multiple lines" on by default (interpolate=True), braced ${VAR} and ${VAR:-default} only, whatever the quoting
Node dotenv (motdotla) accepted and ignored by current versions "inner quotes are maintained (think JSON)"; double-quoted values expand \n quoted values with literal newlines supported since v15 none built in — needs the separate dotenv-expand package
systemd EnvironmentFile= not stripped: the line is dropped and the variable is not set optional; unquoted values keep interior spaces, single quotes are literal, double quotes follow shell escaping yes, inside single or double quotes, or with a trailing backslash none — $ and ${VAR} stay literal
source .env in a POSIX shell needed for child processes to see the variable (or run set -a first) full shell quoting/word-splitting rules apply inside quotes, or via a trailing backslash full shell expansion, because the file is executed as code

Why it matters

Docker Compose uses the project .env file to interpolate compose.yaml, but its documentation states that "a container's environment is not set until there's an explicit entry in the service configuration" — a variable only in .env never reaches the container unless environment: or env_file: passes it on. Compose applies interpolation to env_file: files too, but the same file handed to docker run --env-file is taken literally: interpolation "is a Docker Compose CLI feature", quotes become part of the value, and an export line is rejected. python-dotenv expands ${VAR} by default while Node's dotenv never does without dotenv-expand, and systemd's EnvironmentFile= silently drops an export line. Only an actual source .env in a shell runs the file as code, with the hazards that implies.

How to apply

  • Treat Compose's project .env (interpolation of compose.yaml) and a service's env_file:/environment: (what the container sees) as two separate features.
  • Single-quote values containing $ for Compose; for python-dotenv, which expands ${...} even inside single quotes, pass interpolate=False when values must stay literal. Quote values containing # or spaces explicitly.
  • Leave export out of any file that systemd or docker run --env-file also reads.
  • Do not source a file that a dotenv library also parses, unless it is deliberately valid POSIX shell.

Pitfalls

  • Assuming an env_file: that works under Compose behaves the same with docker run --env-file.
  • Relying on $VAR (no braces) expanding in python-dotenv, which only expands ${VAR}.
  • Expecting systemd's EnvironmentFile= to expand ${VAR} or to honour export.
