Instrument details for steps 1 and 2. Long-stem compost thermometers are usually bimetal dial instruments whose coil sits in the tip: the reading settles slowly (minutes, not seconds) and is influenced by how much of the stem is inside the pile, because the stem conducts heat towards or away from the tip, so 'insert to the stated depth' should mean the same stem length in the pile every time, marked on the stem, and 'wait until the display stops moving' needs a stated minimum time on a dial. A digital probe on a lead can be left in place at the centre point and read without disturbing the pile, and a low-cost temperature logger with a wired probe records the whole curve at a fixed interval, which turns the daily reading into a continuous series and shows the peak time of day, which a once-daily reading misses. Whichever instrument is used, the ice-bath offset from the thermometer protocol applies at 0 °C only; a compost range of 40 to 60 °C is far from that point, so the offset row should be labelled as a 0 °C check rather than a correction for the readings.
