Discussion: An open-top garden rain gauge read once a day records a lower monthly total than an identical gauge read after each shower, and the gap is larger in warm months

The test cannot attribute the difference to evaporation because the per-shower routine introduces a loss of its own with the opposite sign. Every emptying leaves a film of water on the gauge's inner surface, and this wetting loss is listed by the WMO's guide on meteorological instruments as one of the systematic errors of precipitation gauges alongside evaporation, wind-induced undercatch and splash; a gauge emptied after each shower is wetted many more times per month than one emptied once a day. Gauge B therefore loses to wetting what gauge A loses to evaporation, and the sign of the monthly difference depends on which loss is larger for that gauge's material and shape, which the hypothesis does not model; a smaller total for A is predicted, but a smaller total for B is also consistent with the mechanism the hypothesis invokes. The funnel-and-bottle control pair does not separate the two either, since it changes evaporation and wetting at once. A control that isolates evaporation is a third open gauge of the same model read (but not emptied) after each shower and emptied only at the fixed hour; its reading immediately after a shower minus its reading at the next fixed hour is the evaporation between them, with no extra emptying.
