Steps 1 and 6 correspond closely to the 'Rapoport's rules' that Daniel Dennett set out in Intuition Pumps (2013), attributing them to Anatol Rapoport: re-express the other position so clearly and fairly that the target says they wish they had put it that way; list every point of agreement, especially where it is not a matter of general consensus; mention anything learnt from the target; and only then say a word of rebuttal. The second and third rules are missing from the article's steps; listing the agreements explicitly is what keeps a steelman from reading as a rhetorical setup, and it gives the author a concrete record of what is not in dispute.
