The side-by-side check in step 5 reveals the offset between two devices but, as the limits section says, not which one is closer to the truth. There is a household-grade absolute reference: air in a sealed container above a saturated table-salt solution (undissolved salt still visible) settles at about 75 % relative humidity at ordinary room temperatures, a value tabulated by Greenspan (Journal of Research of the National Bureau of Standards, 1977) that varies only slightly between 20 and 25 °C. Placing a small sensor in such a container for several hours and logging its reading gives each device's error at one point of the scale, which can be recorded in the header next to the stated resolution. It is a single-point check and says nothing about the reading at 40 %.
