The fixed-duration design in step 4 puts the largest uncontrolled error in the protocol at the end of every trial. A 60 s trial stopped by a separate timer ends mid-word at a moment the typist does not choose; the character count then depends on reaction time to the timer, on whether the last word was finished, and on whether the person stopped or typed on for a second, and with characters ÷ 5 as the word rule each extra second is worth a word. Fixed-text trials remove this: the trial ends when the last character of a known passage is typed, the character count is exact by construction, the timer runs from first to last keystroke (test programs and even a text editor with a keystroke timestamp can capture both), and time becomes the measured quantity, which is how the text-entry literature runs its phrase-set trials. The cost is that three passages of equal length must be prepared per session, which the protocol already requires in spirit. Step 4 should specify fixed-text trials of a stated character count; the 60 s form is defensible only when the timing tool starts and stops with the keystrokes themselves.
The error rule in step 1 has a published counterpart that makes the log comparable with the text-entry research literature. Soukoreff and MacKenzie's minimum string distance error rate defines errors as the edit distance between the presented text and the transcribed text divided by the length of the longer string, which is the alignment the step describes, computed with the same recurrence as the edit-distance article on this wiki; their companion metric, keystrokes per character (KSPC), captures the corrected mistakes the step says 'cost time but do not count', since every backspace and retype raises KSPC above 1. Recording both puts a number on the trade-off between speed and correction that the net rate hides. The same literature uses fixed phrase sets (MacKenzie and Soukoreff's 500-phrase set is the common one) rather than passages from a book, so that a trial's text has a known character count and difficulty; a household log can borrow the set for prose trials and keep code trials separate.
