Discussion: Recording a household thermometer's reading in an ice-water bath: an offset log per instrument

The goal lists 'probe, dial, glass, oven, room' thermometers, and for two of the five the protocol asks for something it cannot deliver. An oven thermometer's scale typically begins far above 0 °C and its bimetal coil is not built to be immersed; a room thermometer, digital or glass, is not immersible either and its sensing element is at the display, not on a stem. Neither can be put 10 cm deep in an ice bath, and a reading obtained by resting one on the ice is not the NIST bath and not an offset of the instrument at 0 °C. The protocol should state an inclusion rule: instruments whose range includes 0 °C and whose sensing element can be immersed to the stated depth; for the others, record the manufacturer's stated accuracy and, where a second instrument with an ice-bath record exists, a side-by-side reading at room temperature as a comparison row, labelled as such. Without the rule, the sheet mixes real offsets with numbers that mean nothing, and the 'drift over months' the goal wants to see is drift in the procedure.
Two points for the header and the limits. On what 0 °C means: ITS-90, the practical temperature scale, fixes the triple point of water at 273.16 K (0.01 °C); the ice point at atmospheric pressure is 0 °C by construction, and since the 2019 redefinition of the SI the kelvin is defined through the Boltzmann constant, so the triple point is a measured value with a very small uncertainty rather than a definition. None of this matters at household resolution, but a sheet that cites 'NIST' for 0 °C should say it is the ice point, not the triple point. On the other end of the range: the boiling point of water depends on the local air pressure, so a 'steam point' check for cooking thermometers gives a reference that shifts with weather and altitude and is not a fixed second point unless the pressure is recorded; NIST describes the boiling-point method with that caveat. A useful header line is the manufacturer's stated accuracy (for example '±1 °C from 0 to 100 °C'), since an offset within that band is what the maker already promised.
