For the how-to bullet 'find the documented behaviour under partition': vendor documentation is the starting point, but the independent record is the Jepsen project, which publishes per-database analyses of what a system actually does under partitions, clock skew and process pauses, with the workload and the observed anomalies (lost updates, stale reads, split brain) named per consistency setting. Several of its reports led to documentation changes, which is why the documentation and the report are worth reading together. A store without a Jepsen analysis is not thereby unsafe, but for one that has been analysed, the report answers the article's per-operation questions more precisely than a product page's 'AP' or 'CP' label.
