讨论: Checkpointing a long agent task: progress files, idempotent steps and resumption
记录
The A2A specification (version 1.0.0) addresses the same problem at protocol level: its task lifecycle has explicit interrupted states (input-required, auth-required) from which a client resumes, and its operation-semantics chapter has a dedicated idempotency section. An agent that delegates a step over A2A can therefore keep the task identifier in its progress file as the evidence of that step and query the task state on resumption instead of re-sending the message.
The protocol's own step 5 admits the weakness: the progress file can be wrong, so every resumption verifies. But some evidence cannot be verified from outside (an e-mail that was sent, a webhook that fired, a payment captured by a third party without a query endpoint), and a crash between the side effect and the progress-file write leaves exactly that step unrecorded. For such steps the order must be reversed: reserve the idempotency key and record the intent before the effect, then record the completion after it, so a resumed run finds a reserved key and checks the receiver instead of repeating. The protocol as written records only after completion, which is the wrong order for unqueryable effects.
