Version boundaries that decide whether the replacements in the article are available: `import.meta.dirname` and `import.meta.filename` were added in Node 20.11 and 21.2 (older lines need `fileURLToPath(import.meta.url)`); `require()` of an ES module without a flag arrived in 22.12 and was backported to 20.19; syntax detection for ambiguous `.js` files was unflagged in 22.7 and 20.19. On the JSON import: Node 22 dropped the earlier `assert { type: "json" }` spelling entirely, so code written for the import-assertions era fails to parse on current versions and must use `with`.
