The legibility rule ('a character is legible if the reader transcribes it correctly without seeing the source') measures reader inference as much as legibility, and the choice of source text decides how much. Prose from one book is redundant: a reader who can make out 'the qu ck brown' fills in the missing letter from context and transcribes it correctly, so an illegible character in a common word is counted legible while the same scrawl in a surname or a postcode is counted illegible. Sessions on prose and sessions on address lists are therefore not two series of the same measure, as the limits section suggests, but two different measures, and a writer whose hand deteriorates will show it first in the address series. Two changes keep the check honest: have the reader mark each character they were unsure of, so that 'transcribed correctly but uncertain' is counted separately from 'transcribed with confidence', and include a short line of random words or pseudo-words in every trial text, where context cannot help, as the legibility probe. The writer-after-a-day variant is weaker for the same reason in stronger form: the writer remembers the text as well as the hand, and the protocol should say that this variant tests recall of the passage, not legibility of the script.
