Separate sample coverage from shader frequency

MSAA records coverage and depth-stencil decisions at multiple sample locations within a pixel. Ordinary pixel-frequency shading can supply one result to several covered samples. Increasing the sample count therefore does not automatically shade the material independently at every location. Microsoft's rasterization rules explain this distinction. [1]

MSAA is particularly useful at geometric boundaries. It does not automatically solve aliasing in every shader-generated pattern or specular highlight. Sample-frequency shading changes the workload and must be selected deliberately where supported and useful.

Convert cutout alpha into a coverage mask

Alpha-to-coverage turns a shader alpha value into a mask of surviving samples, combined with the primitive's existing coverage. This is useful for detailed cutout shapes such as leaves represented by textured polygons. Surviving samples can participate in normal depth testing and depth writes when enabled.

The conversion is implementation-dependent. Direct3D specifies the endpoint behavior but does not require an identical intermediate mask across hardware; spatial dithering may also be used. [2] Treat alpha as a coverage control in this path and check its actual appearance at the chosen sample count.

Worked example: resolve a selected mask

Consider a pixel with 4 equally weighted samples. Suppose a leaf covers 2 samples with linear color (0, 1, 0), while the other 2 retain background color (0, 0, 1). An averaging color resolve produces (0, 0.5, 0.5).

This example specifies the mask; it does not promise that alpha 0.5 always generates that exact mask on every device. Nor does it imply that the leaf shader ran 4 times. If alpha 0.5 also controls ordinary alpha blending at the surviving samples, the leaf's green contribution becomes 0.25 in the resolved pixel. Coverage and blending have attenuated it separately. Decide whether that behavior matches the material instead of enabling both automatically. Alpha-to-coverage does not itself remove alpha from the blend calculation. [2]

Validate the complete multisample path

Start with an opaque triangle edge, then add a cutout texture. Verify attachment sample counts, supported formats, depth behavior and the resolve into the final image. Inspect thin shapes at several distances and against contrasting backgrounds. Move the camera slowly to reveal quantization or pattern changes.

Check overlapping leaves with depth writes enabled and disabled according to the intended material path. Compare pixel-frequency and sample-frequency shading only when shading variation is the remaining problem. Keep shader output alpha, coverage generation and blend state independently inspectable.

Budget the limits honestly

Low sample counts provide only a limited set of coverage patterns, so tiny features can still disappear or flicker. More samples increase storage and parts of rasterization and resolve work, without implying the same multiplication of total frame time. Alpha-to-coverage approximates coverage, not wavelength-dependent transmission through glass. Measure the actual scene and preserve an appropriate alternative for rendering paths without multisampling.
