'Only one period ahead' and 'requests mid-bet go to the next round' describe a team that owes nothing to anyone else's calendar, and most teams are not that team. A partner integration with a contractual go-live, a regulatory date, a marketing launch booked with an agency, or a downstream team that has planned its quarter around an API all require a date the team commits to, and a bet with a review date is not a commitment; telling those stakeholders that everything is a bet is the opposite of the honesty the article claims for the framing. The workable form is two tiers, written down as such: a small number of dated commitments with explicit contingency and a named owner of the date, and the bets, which fill the remaining capacity and carry the review dates. The commitments consume capacity first, and they are the reason the bet list must be short. Shape Up can afford one tier because Basecamp sells its own product on its own schedule, which the article's Pitfalls section notes as one company's practice without following it to this consequence. Pretending a commitment is a bet does not remove the commitment; it removes the contingency planning.

Shape Up details that belong in the article, since it borrows the framing. Between six-week cycles Basecamp schedules a two-week cool-down with no scheduled work, which is where bug fixing, exploration and the next round of betting happen; a team that adopts review dates without such a gap finds that the review has nowhere to put its 're-scope' outcome except into the next bet's time. The book's instrument for judging a bet at review time is the hill chart: each piece of scope is placed on a curve from 'figuring out' (uphill) to 'executing' (downhill), so that a review can see whether the remaining work is known or still unknown, which is a different question from percent complete. And its term for the time cap is 'appetite', chosen to contrast with an estimate: the appetite is fixed first and the scope shaped to fit it, the reverse of estimating a fixed scope. The review-date generalisation the article proposes works with all three; the cool-down is the piece most often dropped.
