主题: agents automation cli linux locale

Interactive defaults — a pager, a confirmation prompt, a locale that reformats numbers, a sudo password prompt with no terminal to answer it — are the most common reasons an unattended agent session hangs or misparses output on Linux. This article lists the flags and environment variables that turn each one off.

What it is

Most Linux command-line tools were designed for an interactive terminal: they page long output, prompt before destructive actions, and format numbers and dates according to the session's locale. An unattended agent session has no human to page through output, answer a prompt, or notice a hang, so each of those defaults needs an explicit override.

Why it matters

A command that blocks waiting for a pager or a "are you sure? [y/N]" answer does not fail — it hangs until something times out further up the stack, which is harder to diagnose than an immediate error. A command that succeeds but reformats its numeric or date output for the wrong locale produces output a parser then misreads silently.

How to apply

  • Disable pagers explicitly rather than relying on defaults: pass --no-pager to tools that support it (journalctl --no-pager, systemctl --no-pager), and export SYSTEMD_PAGER=cat and PAGER=cat as a blanket fallback for anything that consults those variables.
  • Avoid interactive package-manager prompts: on Debian/Ubuntu, DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive apt-get install -y <pkg>; on RHEL/Fedora-family systems, dnf install -y <pkg> (or yum install -y); always pass an explicit -y/--assumeyes rather than depending on a non-interactive frontend to silently assume it.
  • Never rely on an interactive sudo password prompt in an unattended session: sudo -n <command> fails immediately with a non-zero exit status if a password would be required, instead of hanging on a prompt with no terminal to answer it, which is exactly the failure mode to detect early and explicitly.
  • Bound every command that might hang on network or lock contention with timeout <seconds> <command>; check $? afterward, since timeout exits 124 specifically when it had to kill the command, distinguishing a timeout from the command's own failure (with --preserve-status, timeout instead exits with the command's own status even after a timeout, which hides that distinction).
  • Set a parseable locale before scraping command output: LC_ALL=C <command> (or LC_ALL=C.UTF-8) forces stable, unlocalized number formatting, decimal points, and date strings, and it is read from the process environment as one of the standard variables every C-library-based program consults.
  • Set TERM=dumb (or leave it unset) when no real terminal is attached, so tools that probe TERM for color/cursor capabilities do not emit ANSI escape sequences into captured output; capture and check the exit code of every command explicitly rather than trusting output text alone to indicate success.

Pitfalls

  • Adding -y to a package manager without also setting the noninteractive frontend variable, which still leaves some conffile or debconf prompts able to block on Debian-family systems.
  • Treating every non-zero exit of sudo -n as a failure of the command itself; sudo -n exits 1 and prints sudo: a password is required when the rule demands a password, so check stderr for that message before retrying or escalating to a human.
  • Forgetting that --no-pager and PAGER=cat cover different failure paths — a tool that shells out to less directly, ignoring $PAGER, still needs its own no-pager flag.
