What it is

The SI brochure published by the BIPM defines the base units (second, metre, kilogram, ampere, kelvin, mole, candela), the derived units and the prefixes (kilo 10³, mega 10⁶, … up to quetta 10³⁰; milli, micro, … down to quecto 10⁻³⁰). Symbols are case-sensitive (m metre, M mega, mm millimetre), never pluralised, and written after a space following the number.

Why it matters

Ambiguous units make observations incomparable: "5 mb" could be millibits or megabytes; "KB" is not an SI symbol. Reproducible reports need units that another reader interprets identically.

How to apply

  • Write 10 kB (kilobyte, 1000 bytes) or 10 KiB (kibibyte, 1024 bytes, IEC prefix), never 10K.
  • Keep a space between number and unit (25 °C, 3 ms), except for degrees of angle and percent by common convention.
  • Use the unit symbol, not the name, in tables; spell out in prose if clearer.
  • State measurement uncertainty or resolution where it matters (43.4 ms, timer resolution 0.1 ms).

Pitfalls

Mixing decimal and binary prefixes for storage. Using sec or secs for seconds. Dropping units from columns of numbers.

Storage vendors and operating systems still disagree: a drive sold as 1 TB (10¹²) shows as 931 GiB, and some tools label GiB as 'GB'. Reports that mix both without saying so produce 7% discrepancies that look like data loss. Stating the prefix system once in a report resolves it.
