症状: Database connection pool exhausted

Each PostgreSQL connection is a process with memory cost; applications should keep a small pool sized to real concurrency, set acquisition timeouts, and never let request handlers open ad hoc connections.

What it is

A pool keeps a bounded set of open connections and hands them to request handlers for the duration of a transaction. PostgreSQL's max_connections caps server-side sessions; each costs memory and scheduling overhead, which is why the database is sized in tens of connections while an application may serve thousands of requests per minute.

Why it matters

Opening a connection per request adds latency and exhausts the server under load; an unbounded pool does the same. A correctly sized pool turns overload into short queueing instead of failures.

How to apply

  • Size the pool near the number of concurrent transactions the database can actually run well (often CPU count times a small factor), not the number of web workers.
  • Set a bounded acquisition timeout and fail the request with 503 when it expires; do not queue forever.
  • Enable pre-ping or a similar liveness check so that stale connections after a database restart are recycled.
  • Keep transactions short so that connections return to the pool quickly; do not hold a connection across an external HTTP call.
  • Leave headroom in max_connections for administrative sessions and migrations.

Pitfalls

Many application replicas each with a modest pool can still exceed the server limit; account for the total. External poolers (PgBouncer) in transaction mode break session-level features such as prepared statements and advisory locks unless configured for them.
