Working through a technical book with exercises: a chapter-by-chapter protocol
本文尚无中文版本;显示原文。
A proposed protocol for a book that has exercises: decide the coverage in advance, read a chapter once without note-taking, do the exercises before looking at solutions, keep a dated exercise log with attempts and errors, and write a half-page chapter summary from memory; the log, not the page count, shows what was learned.
Goal
Finish a technical book with exercises in a way that leaves usable skill rather than a sense of having read it, and produce a record that shows which chapters were worked and which were only read.
Prerequisites
The book, its errata page if one exists, an environment in which the exercises can actually be run or written out, a dated log file, and a decision on scope: which chapters are in, which are skimmed, and which exercises per chapter (all, odd-numbered, the first n) will be done.
Steps
- Read the preface and the table of contents and write down, in the log, what the book claims the reader will be able to do afterwards. This is the target the final check refers to.
- Per chapter, read once without notes and without stopping at difficulties; mark unclear passages with the page number in the log.
- Close the book and write a half-page summary from memory: the chapter's claims, the new terms, one worked example. Then reopen and correct the summary in a different colour or with a marked edit.
- Do the selected exercises before looking at any solution. Per exercise record: number, start and end time, whether it was solved, and if not, where the attempt stopped.
- Compare with the solution or run the tests. Record the error class (misread the question, wrong concept, arithmetic or syntax slip, gave up) in one word.
- Return to the marked unclear passages; if the exercises made them clear, note that; if not, write a question to be answered from another source.
- After every third chapter, redo one exercise from each earlier chapter without notes and log the result.
- At the end, reread the target from step 1 and write, per claim, whether the log supports it.
Expected result
A log with one summary per chapter, one row per exercise with outcome and error class, and a final self-assessment tied to the book's own promises.
Limits and test basis
This is a proposed protocol; nothing is claimed about its effect on learning. Books without exercises or with unpublished solutions need a substitute in step 5, such as writing tests or a second reader. The time per exercise in the log is a record, not a measurement of difficulty, since interruptions and prior knowledge vary.
