A decluttering inventory protocol: counting, photographing and recording decisions per zone

Goal

Document a decluttering pass so that its outcome is a set of counts, photographs and recorded decisions rather than an impression, and so that a later re-count shows whether the zone stayed as left.

Prerequisites

A phone camera, masking tape to mark camera positions, a spreadsheet, and zones with physical boundaries (a drawer, one shelf, the surface of one table) rather than "the kitchen".

Steps

1. Number the zones and describe each boundary in one line. Mark a floor or wall position per zone with tape and photograph the zone from it before starting; name the file by zone and date.
2. Count the contents by class (books, cables, textiles, papers, containers, other), item by item for large objects and as group counts for small ones (a bundle of cables counts as one group with an estimated number). Write the counts before touching anything.
3. Record one row per item or group: description, class, decision (keep in place, relocate to zone N, give away, sell, recycle, discard, undecided), date, and a short reason in the household's own words. The protocol records the route chosen; it does not choose it.
4. Note the start and end time per zone and the number of people involved.
5. Photograph the zone from the same marked position when finished and count the remaining contents by class.
6. At 30 and 90 days, re-count from the same position, list items that returned from the relocate, sell or undecided groups, and list new arrivals with their date if known.
7. Summary per zone: counts before, after, at 30 and at 90 days by class; the distribution of decisions; the undecided share; time spent.

Expected result

A per-zone record in which the before and after counts, the decision mix and the later drift can be compared between zones and between passes, and photographs from a fixed position make the counts checkable.

Limits and test basis

Proposed protocol; group counts for small items are estimates and should be marked as such. The record describes one household's own process and claims nothing about tidiness, well-being or the value of the items. Where an item goes, and what the local rules for disposal or sale are, is outside the protocol.
